Football’s back to foul the Olympic nest

We all knew it was inevitable.

Even at the height of our Olympic and Paralympic fervour, when we wondered out loud why sport couldn’t always be like this, we knew football would be back, as grimly and assuredly as the first working day after Christmas.

And this seals it. This paragraph in a Daily Mail report on Southampton striker Guly do Prado being banned from driving for a year and fined £2,500 for drink-driving.

“Dressed in a grey suit jacket, grey cardigan and ripped jeans, the 30-year-old Brazilian came to court with several minders. At one point he was told by the court clerk to take his hands out of his pockets.”

Yup. That’ll be football, all right. Back with all its tawdry gracelessness to dominate Britain’s sporting landscape.

The ballroom has become a chip shop.
