Cat and mouse game a study in diligence

My wife saw the beastie; penned into a corner at our porch door by one of our four cats, the mouse spotted an impossibly small hole in the old door frame and disappeared into it, finding refuge behind the skirting board.

That night, there was no moving our cat. He was sat in the hall, three feet from the hole when I came home from work. He was there when I ate my dinner, there when I came downstairs for a cup of tea mid-evening and still there when I came down to clean my teeth before bed.

“You have to admire commitment like that,” said Older Son, mirroring my thoughts.

Okay, so cats don’t have bills to pay and ends to make meet. They can’t read and TV presumably does little for them. They have the time, you could say.

Even so. Six hours, just waiting.

I am not in the least surprised to come downstairs this morning to find a headless mouse waiting for me. Not even the darkness could save him from a creature that would not be denied.

I am slightly in awe of him this morning, I must confess.
