A bitter-sweet World Cup and a quadrennial reminder that life is movin’ on…

And so it begins, the first World Cup that my father hasn’t been around for.

Which should be just a silly detail, of course, except it isn’t. For those of you of a certain age, meanwhile, talkSPORT’s look at The Most Embarassing World Cup Stickers Ever, throws up a horror even worse than Gordon Banks’ sinister moustache. Not that there has ever been anything innately wrong with Spain manager Vicente Del Bosque’s appearance: it’s just that the adjacent photograph shows the Vicente we have known and loved for so long, and so his 1978 pre-incarnation, courtesy of talkSport, may come as something of a shock to the more seasoned among you.
